A bipartisan group of lawmakers is continuing a series of statewide hearings aimed at finding better ways to tackle Pennsylvania’s opioid addiction crisis. The third of eight hearings was held Wednesday in Westmoreland County and included testimony from area law enforcement officials and drug treatment organizations about the growing drug epidemic and what new strategies are needed to address the situation. The General Assembly will be convening a special session to address the opioid crisis this fall in Harrisburg. Rep. Judy Ward (R-Blair) attended the hearing and said this joint information gathering effort is the first step in finding new solutions to help bring an end to the drug addiction crisis facing the state.

The second of eight hearings was held Tuesday in Pittsburgh and included testimony from regional representatives of human services, medical and law enforcement organizations about the growing drug epidemic and what new strategies are needed to address the situation. The General Assembly will be convening a special session on the opioid crisis this fall in Harrisburg. Rep. Aaron Kaufer (R-Luzerne) is attending the hearings and said this joint effort is the first step in finding what solutions will be essential to successfully addressing the drug addiction problems now facing the state.

Pennsylvania’s ongoing opioid crisis was the topic of a hearing held Monday by bipartisan group of state lawmakers in Venango County. The event marked the kick off of an eight stop tour across the Commonwealth by members of the House Republican and Democrat Policy Committees to gather testimony from experts about the growing drug epidemic and how it is impacting communities. Information gathered from the hearings will be used to develop legislative and policy recommendations that will be considered when the Legislature reconvenes this fall for a special session on the opioid crisis. Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer & Butler) said the hearings are just the first step in building awareness and finding solutions to the growing problem of opioid addiction sweeping the state.
