First Wine Sold in Grocery Store in PA Since Prohibition

Legislation sponsored by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) recently went into effect to privatize the sale of wine in Pennsylvania and take the first step in dismantling the Commonwealth’s monopoly on the retail and wholesale sales of wine and liquor. Thanks to the new law, wine is now being sold in a Pennsylvania grocery store for the first time since prohibition. Speaker Turzai said that after more than 80 years of full government control, the Privatization Era has begun in the Commonwealth.

Boback Introduces Bill to Encourage Protection of Children

Legislation designed to encourage citizens to take action when they encounter children trapped in a hot car has been introduced in Harrisburg. House Bill 2276 would provide civil immunity for any damage done by those who act responsibly in rescuing a child from a hot car. Bill sponsor Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wyoming) said people who step in to provide assistance should not have to fear civil penalties for their lifesaving action. House Bill 2276 now awaits consideration by the House Judiciary Committee.

Delozier to Gov. Wolf: Stop Playing Favorites with State Employees

Governor Wolf’s decision to award unionized state workers and his personal staff with large raises, while denying non-unionized employees any increase for the second consecutive year has drawn criticism from Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland), whose district is home to hundreds of state employees. Delozier questioned the Governor’s motives during budget negotiations as he had insisted that new taxes were necessary to maintain state government operations, and then chose use the money to reward his political allies.

Speaker Turzai’s Wine Privatization Bill Takes Effect

Legislation sponsored by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) went into effect this week to privatize the sale of wine in Pennsylvania and take the first step in dismantling the Commonwealth’s monopoly on the retail and wholesale sales of wine and liquor. Under the new law, PA consumers will soon be able to buy wine in participating grocery stores, have direct shipment of wine to their home and have wine-to-go from restaurants and hotels. Speaker Turzai said he is confident the groundbreaking legislation will significantly enhance convenience and accessibility for consumers and may eventually lead to the full privatization of wine and spirits sales in the state.

Rep. Saccone Comments on Hearings Aimed at Finding Solutions for PA’s Growing Drug Epidemic

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is continuing a series of statewide hearings aimed at finding better ways to tackle Pennsylvania’s opioid addiction crisis. The third of eight hearings was held Wednesday in Westmoreland County and included testimony from area law enforcement officials and drug treatment organizations about the growing drug epidemic and what new strategies may be needed to address the situation. The General Assembly plans to convene a special legislative session on the opioid addiction crisis this fall. Rep. Rick Saccone (R-Washington & Allegheny) has attended the hearings and said the information gathering effort is essential to finding new solutions to the widespread addiction problem.
