HARRISBURG – Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) partnered with U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon today to renew calls for Pennsylvania’s governor to opt in to a new, federal tax credit designed to expand opportunities for K-12 students.

White supports Pennsylvania’s participation in a new program under which tax filers can receive a federal tax credit of up to $1,700 when they donate to approve scholarship organizations helping to cover education costs such as tuition, tutoring and school supplies. McMahon added her voice to the growing, bipartisan chorus asking for Gov. Josh Shapiro to opt in, as 27 other governors already have.

“Secretary McMahon recognizes the importance of growing our state’s already robust options for families seeking the best educational opportunities for their children,” White said. “We’ve really set the standard for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit programs, so it should be a no-brainer for us to take advantage of this federal tax credit developed, in large part, courtesy of our own Sen. Dave McCormick.”

McMahon, speaking at a press conference, emphasized that families with choices are able to address their concerns about class size, test scores, security, curriculum and learning styles.

More than 250,000 Pennsylvania students already attend schools outside traditional public school systems because their parents sought options that best meet their needs. Use of the federal tax credit would build on that foundation.

“For parents, school choice is not about politics. It is about finding a learning environment where their child can succeed,” White said.
