Highlights upcoming 11th Annual Maple Weekend in Potter and Tioga counties
HARRISBURG – Rep. Matt Baker (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter) this week joined his colleagues in the state House in unanimously passing legislation designating the week of March 15-22 as Maple Producers Week in Pennsylvania. The resolution was authored by Baker’s Potter County neighbor, Rep. Martin Causer.
“Agriculture is the state’s No. 1 industry and maple producers are an important part of that,” said Baker. “Especially here in the Northern Tier, which is home to the second largest maple producer in the country, we are proud to produce such great tasting syrup and having a viable business that adds to our local economy.”
Baker said Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation in maple syrup production, and according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, last year the Commonwealth produced 146,000 gallons of syrup with a production value of more than $4.7 million. That’s up from 134,000 gallons and a production value of more than $3.7 million in 2013.
In addition to syrup, maple sap is also used to make butter, candies, caramels, taffy, cotton candy and more.
Baker noted that several “Maple Taste and Tour” weekends are held throughout the state during the month of March. The events include open houses at maple syrup operations, pancake breakfasts, maple product samples and demonstrations of maple syrup production.
The Potter-Tioga Maple Syrup Producers Association will hold its 11th Annual Maple Weekend on March 21-22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about activities and participating producers, visit
