HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeremy Shaffer (R-Allegheny) announced that he will be a member of the bipartisan House Fire and EMS Caucus.
The caucus aims to focus legislative attention on issues facing the commonwealth’s providers of emergency services.
“Emergency services are something that affect everyone, whether you live in a big city or small town, are young or old, and are Republican, Democrat or another party,” Shaffer said. “If and when we need to dial 9-1-1, we need someone there to answer the call.”
The caucus was revived last year and was formally introduced during a recent news conference where members of the caucus set forth their goals for the current legislative session.
Fire and EMS agencies throughout the state are largely nonprofit and staffed by volunteer personnel. They’ve seen a steep decline in volunteer recruitment and retention and at the same time, increased costs to sustain these overburdened services. The caucus will work on legislation focused on better funding and financial support for emergency service organizations, personnel safety and workforce development.
“I am looking forward to this bipartisan effort where we can find solutions our first responders,” Shaffer said.
