HARRISBURG – Rep. Barry Jozwiak (R-Berks) issued the following statement in response to House approval of a proposal to provide dollar-for-dollar school property tax reductions across the Commonwealth:
“The proposal passed today by the House is an important achievement in the overall effort to completely replace school district property taxes. This vote helps to move forward the process of replacing school property taxes with state income tax and sales tax revenues.
“Under this proposal, school property taxpayers would benefit from nearly $5 billion in property tax reductions. Each and every dollar of new revenue generated by the state sales tax and income tax would be used to deliver dollar-for-dollar school property tax reductions.
“Since the time I took office in January, residents in our district have identified the issue of school property taxes as a top priority. While I remain committed to completely eliminating school district property taxes, I voted in favor of this bill because it would achieve real dollar-for-dollar school property tax relief for residents of Berks County.
“I favor advancing the meaningful property tax reform included in this bill in order to seriously begin the process of providing residents with the school property tax relief they desperately need and deserve.
“I look forward to the opportunity to work with our colleagues in the state Senate toward the ultimate elimation of school property taxes.”
The property tax proposal,
House Bill 504, now heads to the Senate for its consideration.
