HARRISBURG –To honor the vital and integral role a trauma registrar has as part of a trauma team, Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Peach Bottom) drafted legislation to recognize May 15 as Trauma Registrar Day in Pennsylvania.
Each accredited trauma center in Pennsylvania is required to have a trauma registrar. This person enters data into the trauma registry, which is a file composed of uniform data elements that describe the injury event, demographics, pre-hospital information, diagnosis, care, outcomes and costs of treatment of injured patients. In addition to entering data, the trauma registrar also generates reports, analyzes data and assists with research.
“It is important to acknowledge that high-quality data begins with high-quality data entry, and it is the trauma registrar who is responsible for performing this task,” Cutler said. “The trauma registrar is a vital and integral part of the trauma team, the overall performance improvement process at a trauma center and the public health. It is important to recognize the vital role they play in the trauma centers of Pennsylvania.”
Trauma registrars come from diverse backgrounds such as nursing, medical records, computer science and medical informatics, among others. They must be continuous learners and attend courses to stay current with their knowledge.
As
House Resolution 270 was passed in the House, the House bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
