HARRISBURG – Farmers, producers, agriculture organizations and advocates, state officials and the public are invited to gather Wednesday, May 3, at the state Capitol for a Blessing of the Balers and a celebration of the state’s top industry.
The event is being organized by state Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) and is modeled after the first “Blessing of the Balers,” which was held last year in Greene County.
“Agriculture is a cornerstone of the state’s economy, but more importantly it puts food on our tables,” Cook said. “This is an opportunity to celebrate the hard-working men and women who work in the barns and fields, and to bless the balers in preparation for a productive hay season.”
The Blessing of the Balers: A Celebration of Pennsylvania Agriculture will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, on Commonwealth Avenue in Harrisburg, just behind the state Capitol building. Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for the event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A tractor and baler will be on display before and after the event.
Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding and Farm Bureau President Chris Hoffman are among those expected to speak. The Rev. Donald Wilson of Greene County will offer the blessing on a baler and tractor on display at the event. Farmers planning to attend are encouraged to bring their hitch pins to participate in the blessing.
