HARRISBURG – The state House approved Senate Bill 1, a public pension reform measure, and House Bill 466, a liquor divestment plan, on Tuesday, Rep. Brian Ellis (R-Butler) said. After the votes, Ellis made the following statement:

“Public pension reform is something that Pennsylvania desperately needs, and I am glad Senate Bill 1 has now passed in both chambers of the General Assembly. The negative impacts that come along with the results of inaction on this pension issue are simply crippling. Our current debt due to the underfunding between our two public pension systems totals more than $50 billion. It will take us years to overcome a debt that large. That’s why this reform measure is so important. By supporting public pension reform, we’re supporting a more financially stable future for our public education system, our taxpayers and our Commonwealth.

“Pennsylvania’s current state-store system creates a conflict of interest, and House Bill 466, which the House passed today, would assist in putting an end to that. Our state government has many priorities, and selling liquor and wine should not be one of them. I’ve heard from my constituents, and they tell me they want to be like the other 48 states that turned the power over to the private sector. This plan we passed in the House today is about customer convenience.”

Senate Bill 1, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-Centre), and House Bill 466, sponsored by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), have been sent to the governor for his consideration.
