HARRISBURG – Rep. Duane Milne (R-Chester County) released the following statement on the state House of Representatives’ partial override of Gov. Tom Wolf’s budget veto:

“I joined a majority of my House colleagues to attempt to override Gov. Wolf’s veto of a portion of the budget we sent him nearly two months ago. Unfortunately, we were not successful in attaining the two-thirds votes needed to pass an override.

“I am disappointed in the immediate moment, but will continue to fight to end this stalemate.

“We moved to make these responsible allocations because Harrisburg should not ask the agencies providing essential services to citizens in my district and across Pennsylvania to go longer without needed state aid.

“Local institutions now acutely feel the cost of the delay so far imposed by the governor’s veto. The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania has reported county departments have been forced to cut back on services, use reserve funds, pay providers late, and increase borrowing. We owe our local officials -- and the residents they serve -- better than that.

“The spending items we tried to enact are closely aligned with the governor’s own proposals, which means they would not have impacted either the ongoing budget negotiations or the state’s fiscal condition. If the governor still differs with the tax policy or other provisions of the budget we sent him in June, those discussions can continue.

“This override would have provided relief to many Pennsylvanians. Almost two months into our budget impasse, I wish we could have come together on that.”
