HARRISBURG – Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton) today issued a challenge to Gov. Tom Wolf to publically explain his 2015-16 budget proposal and the tax increases included in it. The governor’s latest plan is to raise the Personal Income Tax from 3.07 percent to 3.49 percent and to expand the Sales and Use Tax (6 percent) to include a number of services not currently taxed.
“The governor has said that he wants to reach out to rank-and-file Republican lawmakers to build support for his stalled budget and tax plan,” said Simmons. “My challenge to him is to publically make his case. My hope is that we can make progress toward an agreement by sitting down together, with the media present and no staff at the table. It will be his opportunity to sell the benefits of his proposal to me, the people of my district and the hard-working taxpayers of Pennsylvania.”
In the meantime, House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) has announced that the governor’s tax plan will be put up for a vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to determine if there is support for his proposal. If there is not, Reed is hopeful the two sides can move forward with a budget agreement that makes sense for Pennsylvania.
