HARRISBURG — State Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Montgomery) today voted against a measure considered and rejected by the state House that would have increased the state Personal Income Tax by 16 percent. Gov. Tom Wolf proposed the income tax increase in a tax package he unveiled Tuesday.

“The governor’s proposal called for a significant increase in taxes paid by working Pennsylvanians,” Vereb said. “Taking more money out of people’s paychecks through higher taxes is comparable to a pay cut. A lot of people couldn’t afford the pay cut the governor was proposing.”

Wolf’s tax hikes were offered as an amendment to a bill that was considered today by the House.

Today’s vote marks the second time the state House has considered and rejected a tax hike proposal offered by the governor. The House in June voted down legislation that included the tax increases outlined by the governor in his March budget address.

“We’re trying to work with the governor to develop a workable solution,” said Vereb. “We’ve given his proposals up-or-down votes in the state House. We need him to bring us a more realistic proposal.”

Vereb said he hopes today’s vote will help jumpstart budget negotiations between the governor and legislators.

“I’m going to keep working to deliver a responsible budget for the people of Pennsylvania,” Vereb said.
