HARRISBURG – Rep. Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny) expresses disappointment that the preliminary reapportionment map divides the current 30th Legislative District into three separate districts.
“As a life-long resident of the North Hills of Pittsburgh, and a former local elected official, I was disappointed to learn the map proposed by the Legislative Reapportionment Commission (LRC) chose to divide communities that have collaborated for decades,” said Mizgorski. “The Route 8 corridor is central to the district and the adjacent municipalities have a history of working together.”
The 30th Legislative District, which covers part of the northern suburbs of Allegheny County, includes the Townships of Hampton, Richland and Shaler (wards 2-7), the borough of Fox Chapel, and parts of the township of O’Hara. Every 10 years redistricting is done to ensure that all areas are represented evenly.
“Local governments in the 30th District have cooperated for years in creating intergovernmental authorities to provide services and unite communities of interest,” Mizgorski continued. “Many families are spread across the district. Our population had a modest increase, and the map needed only minor surgery, not the ‘slice and dice’ efforts of the LRC chairman. The current 30th District is compact, contiguous and politically competitive. Anyone with firsthand knowledge of the area knows this.”
The redistricting commission is made up of Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland), Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa (D-Allegheny), House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin), House Minority Leader Joanna McClinton (D-Delaware/Philadelphia) and Chairman Mark Nordenberg, who was appointed by the Supreme Court and is the former chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. In an unprecedented move, Nordenberg expanded his role as LRC chairman to draw the preliminary House map.
