HARRISBURG – The General Assembly today approved a responsible budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year that respects taxpayers by not raising taxes and saves money to offset any future proposed tax increases. In response, Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland), who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, which works to create the yearly budgets, issued the following statement:
“We all understand how to negotiate our family budget in a responsible manner. We spend money to cover our priorities and save the rest. Similarly, I believe this budget was negotiated in a responsible manner. Those that are getting more funding—education, nursing homes, transportation, and public safety are some of those that had it the worst over the past year. By increasing their funding, they will be able to recovery and our economy can move forward towards prosperity.
“In the realm of education, basic education funding will be increased by $300 million for an historic amount of $7.1 billion. In addition, $44 million of federal relief funds is earmarked for career and technical schools so students can learn the skills needed for the jobs that are available today and tomorrow.
“As with our family budget, we also recognized the importance of saving. This budget puts aside $2.52 billion for future use to address unforeseen circumstances. We do not know what the future holds, or how the economy will react as we begin to rebuild. It is vitally important we stow money into savings for that we are prepared for the future. This budget does that while addressing the real needs of today.”
