HARRISBURG – Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Erie), chairman of the House Education Committee, today issued the following statement after House passage of the 2021-22 state budget:
“The COVID-19 pandemic hurt many children’s learning and the final 2021-22 Fiscal Year state budget recognizes this by supporting educational opportunities for all children, no matter what type of school they attend.
“It increases basic education funding by $300 million and early childhood education by $30 million. In addition, $350 million in federal relief funds will be sent to schools to support children who suffered educational losses due to the pandemic.
“We also are helping parents and children who pursue a variety of educational opportunities as we know a one-size-fits-all approach does not work by increasing the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program by 22% to $225 million. This program provides low- and middle-income families scholarships to help pay for private school and prekindergarten programs, in addition to supporting innovative public-school programs.
“We are doing all of this without raising taxes.”
