Jun. 25, 2021 / Press Release
HARRISBURG –Rep. Jason Silvis (R-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana) issued the following statement in response to passage of the Fiscal Year 2021-22 state budget:
“While this is my first state budget, I am proud to stand with my colleagues to once again fight back against the governor’s insatiable desire to tax the residents of Pennsylvania. Shockingly, almost five months ago, the governor proposed a $7 billion Personal Income Tax increase. At the time, the state’s economy was struggling under COVID-19 restrictions and an unemployment system that was barely functioning. We have prevailed, though, and have approved a no-tax-or-fee-increase Fiscal Year 2021-22 budget that helps put the Commonwealth on a path to recovery.
“Schools are receiving additional basic education and special education funding. In addition, $350 million in federal stimulus funds is being used to help negate learning loss due to the pandemic. We are also sending $282 in federal relief dollars to nursing homes, assisted living and personal care homes that incurred unexpected expenses to stop the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, we are funding two new cadet classes to add 180 troopers to the complement.”
“While this budget helps address past COVID-19 costs, we also are looking to the future by sending $2.52 billion on the Rainy Day Fund. No one can predict the next obstacle that will present itself. By bringing the fund to a historic high level, we will be better prepared to weather the storm.”
