Legislation Allowing Pharmacists to Offer Flu Shots to Children Passes House, Grove Says
HARRISBURG – Legislation which would increase access by allowing pharmacists to offer flu vaccines to children ages 9 and older, with parental permission, passed the House today, Rep. Seth Grove (R-York), the author of the bill, said. House Bill 182, if eventually signed into law, would also allow licensed pharmacy interns under the direct supervision of a pharmacist to administer the vaccine.
“Statistics show that only around half the children in Pennsylvania receive flu shots,” Grove said. “We need to do what we can to increase convenience for parents, in order to keep children across the Commonwealth healthy.”
The legislation would also help active duty members of the military, veterans and their dependents. Under TRICARE, the military’s health care plan, all immunizations administered by a pharmacist are covered without a co-payment.
“As of now, military personnel must pay out of pocket for flu shots at a doctor’s office,” Grove said. “This bill would make it possible for their children to receive the shots free of charge.”
