House Approves Vereb-Backed Measure Honoring Law Enforcement Officers
HARRISBURG – The state House today in Harrisburg approved a resolution initially introduced by Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Montgomery) honoring the service of police officers in the Commonwealth and across America by making 2015 the Year of the Law Enforcement Officer in Pennsylvania.
“Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line each and every day they wear their badges,” Vereb said. “They perform a dangerous job to protect the people in our Commonwealth and our country.”
Vereb initially introduced
House Resolution 232 before turning over the measure to newly elected state Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia), who took the oath of office Monday after winning a special election on March 24 to serve the residents of the 170th District.
“I really appreciate Representative Martina White’s willingness to hit the ground running as a legislator and take ownership of this important resolution,” Vereb said.
Speaking about law enforcement officers while delivering comments in the House, White said, “While we need them for our safety, they need our support and appreciation.”
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 126 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2014. That represents a 24 percent increase compared to 2013.
Vereb pointed to the ambush attack on two Pennsylvania State Police officers in September in Pike County. Cpl. Bryon Keith Dickson II was shot and killed outside the Blooming Grove Barracks. Trooper Alex Douglass was seriously injured during the attack.
“The men and women who protect our communities by serving as law enforcement officers provide a valuable public service,” Vereb said. “This resolution is one way our entire Commonwealth can show its appreciation.”
Law enforcement officers plan to hold a rally on Tuesday in the Main Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg in support of the resolution adopted today by the House.
