Oberlander Raises Awareness of Women’s Lung Health through House Resolution
HARRISBURG – As a way to increase the awareness of lung cancer and other lung diseases affecting women across the state, Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion/Armstrong/Forest) voted on Tuesday in support of a resolution naming the week of May 10-16, 2015, as Women’s Lung Health Week.
“Little known is the fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women around the country, and that is backed up by a recent survey in which only 1 percent of women named lung cancer as a top concern for them,” Oberlander said.
Although smoking is just one factor in incidents of lung cancer around the country, so are many other causes, including exposure to radon. In fact, two-thirds of lung cancer cases are found in women who have never smoked or have successfully quit smoking.
Other statistics show that the lung cancer death rate in women has almost doubled over the past 37 years, and a woman in the U.S. is told she has lung cancer every five minutes.
“By increasing awareness of lung health, we can alert more women and their families to the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and other lung diseases and help them get the treatment they need to hopefully save more lives,” Oberlander said. “That’s why resolutions like the one we passed this week are so important.”
