House Passes Keller’s Bill that Names a Cumberland County Bridge in Honor of War Hero
5/6/2015
HARRISBURG – Legislation sponsored by Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry/Cumberland) that would designate a bridge in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, in memory of a local war hero was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives on Tuesday. House Bill 501 now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Under the proposal, the bridge, which carries State Route 641 over the Conodoguinet Creek, will be named the Army Pfc. Harold “Sam” E. Barrick Memorial Bridge. The bridge, located near Barrick’s birthplace in Newville, is currently being rebuilt.

The Big Spring High School graduate was killed in action in Vietnam on April 8, 1968, at the age of 20.

“By naming the bridge, which is near the family home, we will forever be reminded of the ultimate sacrifice Pfc. Sam Barrick courageously made for his country while serving in Vietnam,” said Keller.

Prior to his death, Barrick was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon. He also received the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal posthumously.
