Tobash Supports Fiscally Responsible Spending Plan on Saturday in State House
HARRISBURG – Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin) voted in favor of a fiscally responsible legislative budget proposal which included no tax increases in the state House on Saturday, June 27. After the vote, Tobash issued the following statement:
“I was proud to support the budget proposal that would spend $30.18 billion and was brought before the House today because I believe it is a reasonable spending plan that funds core services government is responsible for providing. State spending plans like the one we passed today will lead Pennsylvania to a brighter future. Through declining unemployment rates and lower energy prices, we have seen the positive results of budgets that respect Pennsylvania taxpayers. This legislative budget proposal meets our constitutional job to ensure a ‘government that works’ continues to operate as needed.
“We are focused on education in this budget. In fact, some of the Department of Education’s most important line items received notable increases, including a $100 million increase for basic education funding; $25 million increase for Pre-K Counts; and a $5 million increase for Headstart, which will help to serve an additional 3,500 children.
“I was glad to see this budget included the full $2.8 billion required pension payment. By paying our full pension payment, we’re being good fiscal stewards of every taxpayer dollar. Since 2010, we have stopped kicking this can down the road.
“The budget Gov. Tom Wolf proposed earlier this year wanted to increase taxes by $9.7 billion over the next two years. On June 1, the tax increases necessary to fund the governor’s budget proposal were put up for a vote in the form of an amendment to a tax code bill. Not one House member voted in favor of those tax increases. By not raising taxes on hard-working Pennsylvanians and employers, we help businesses create and retain ‘jobs that pay.’”
