It’s a Good Day for Pennsylvania Taxpayers, Bloom Says

Pension reform, liquor divestment, budget legislation advances

HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland) today released a statement following historic votes in the General Assembly on three statewide issues that directly impact Pennsylvania schools, communities and taxpayers:

“It’s a good day, an exciting day, for Pennsylvania taxpayers — we voted to fix our dysfunctional state pensions to be just like what everyone else gets in the real world; we voted to end the expensive, ridiculous state liquor monopoly; and we voted to enact a responsible budget that doesn’t increase a single tax on our hard-working families. These are the votes the citizens of my community elected me to make; the stakes are high, and it feels good to be doing the right thing, the responsible thing, to be good stewards for our kids and our grandkids.”

Senate Bill 1 aims to address Pennsylvania’s growing pension crisis, which continues to threaten the economics of the state and local school districts. The legislation would establish a hybrid defined contribution/cash balance plan for future state and school employees, rather than the current defined benefit plan. The bill now heads to the governor’s desk.

House Bill 466 will end full government control of wine and spirits sales in the Commonwealth by giving beer distributors the opportunity to obtain a license to sell wine and spirits under a single roof, and would provide other current license holders with additional retail sale options. The House voted Tuesday to send House Bill 466 to the governor’s desk.
