State Officials Discuss Changes to Child Protection Laws
YORK TOWNSHIP - Volunteers from churches, fire companies and Little League teams were among those in attendance at Thursday’s seminar on Pennsylvania’s recent changes to child protection laws, according to state Rep. Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York Township). The event was held at Dallastown Intermediate School.
“Members of the General Assembly from all corners of the state have fielded many questions since Act 153 of 2013 put into statute strict guidelines involving adult interaction with children,” Phillips-Hill said. “The changes made by Act 15 of 2015 have addressed shortcomings of the original legislation. This seminar was an opportunity to further clear up any discrepancies and allow volunteers and employees to ask questions of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS).”
Cindi Horshaw represented the department and presented a PowerPoint presentation that is available for viewing at
www.RepKristin.com. Hard copies of the presentation are currently available at Phillips-Hill’s district office, located at 6872 Susquehanna Trail, between Jacobus and Loganville.
“The highest volume of questions we receive deal with background checks,” said Horshaw, who divided the presentation into three parts – mandated reporting requirements, mandated child abuse reporter training and background checks and clearances. “We field thousands of applications for clearances every day, including approximately 6,000 last Monday alone. The department appreciates an opportunity like this to get out in the community and answer direct questions.”
DHS has set up a website,
www.KeepKidsSafe.pa.gov, to address questions and concerns. They have established a hotline, 1-800-932-0313, which is to be used only to report suspected cases of child abuse.
