House, Senate Agriculture Committees to Discuss Avian Influenza Preparedness

WHAT: The House and Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committees, chaired by Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) and Sen. Elder Vogel (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence), will hold an informational meeting to discuss the state’s preparedness for the potential spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza to Pennsylvania. The meeting is being held in conjunction with the annual Ag Progress Days.

WHO: Causer, Vogel, members of the committees and the following speakers: Chris Herr, vice president of PennAg Industries; Brian Snyder, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture; Russell Redding, secretary of the state Department of Agriculture; Dr. Craig Shultz, state veterinarian and director of the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services in the state Department of Agriculture; Dr. Richard Roush, dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State University; Dr. Sherrill Davison, associate professor and director of the laboratory of avian medicine and pathology at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center; and Ross Pifer, clinical professor of law and director of the Center for Agricultural and Shale Law at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law.

WHEN: Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Russell E. Larson Ag Research Center, 2710 West Pine Grove Road, Pennsylvania Furnace, PA 16865. The meeting will be held in the theater at the College of Agricultural Sciences Exhibits Building.
