Beaver County Democrats Vote Against Restored Funding for Crucial Services, Christiana Says
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver/Washington) today issued the following statement after House Democrats voted to shut down efforts by House Republicans to send state budget funding for crucial services such as domestic violence and rape crisis centers. House Republicans attempted to override portions of Gov. Tom Wolf’s historic veto of the entire state spending plan for the 2015-16 fiscal year.
“When Republicans, Democrats and the governor agree on 274 of the 404 line items in the state budget, there is no reason our most vulnerable citizens should have to suffer. Attempts by Democrats to cover up their unconscionable decision by calling these votes a stunt is disrespectful to the people who rely on these services, and to the people who deliver them.
“The vote against overriding vetoes today was a vote against the PHEAA grant recipients heading back to Penn State Beaver and the Community College of Beaver County for the fall semester. It’s a vote against the underinsured patient waiting for a free breast cancer screening at Heritage Valley. It’s a vote against funding for local rape crisis centers and domestic violence programs, and organizations that put food on the table every day for those in need. It’s truly unfortunate that the people who are patiently waiting for these services will continue to be held hostage because of the votes made by Democratic leaders and Beaver County Democrats, at the encouragement of Gov. Tom Wolf.”
