Wheeland Issues Statement on Budget Veto Override Attempt
HARRISBURG – Rep. Jeff C. Wheeland (R-Lycoming) today issued the following statement on the failure of the House, along party lines, to override select line items in the state budget passed by the General Assembly and vetoed by the governor:
“The effort that my colleagues and I put forth to send much-needed state funding to human services and other agencies was defeated. These votes represented a good-faith effort to bring help to those who need it the most.
“On June 30, we passed a balanced budget for the people of Pennsylvania. This was rejected by the governor, placing our Commonwealth in this precarious status.
“Out of 401 individual line items in the state budget, we have agreement on 274 of them. The governor could have signed the line items that are agreed-to and then negotiate the remaining sections for a complete budget.
“This act of denying state funding to these vital services does not represent good government. We could have sent funding for school food services, domestic violence aid, rape crisis centers and others. I expected better.”
