Ellis Votes in Favor of Budget Veto Overrides
HARRISBURG – Rep. Brian Ellis (R-Butler) voted in favor of overriding several of Gov. Tom Wolf’s vetoes to the state budget on Tuesday, in an effort to try and restore state funding to some of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens. Ellis made the following statement after the votes today:
“Simply put, today I voted in favor of overriding certain budget line items that would provide funding to some of Pennsylvania’s human service organizations and schools. To me, that was a no-brainer, as I believe that voting against these overrides is plainly disrespectful to the people who rely on these services.
“Throughout this budget impasse, the people of Pennsylvania have asked us to the do right thing and provide funding to those who need it. Today, we had the opportunity to set politics aside and make things right. The only lines considered today were the lines that were basically the same as the governor proposed. What amazes me is that the governor worked hand in hand with the House Democrats to encourage ‘no’ votes on these items that were actually the numbers we all agreed to in June before the governor vetoed the whole budget.
“We have kids going back to school; some schools have reported they don’t know how long they will be able to keep their doors open without state funding. Human service organizations are shutting down and cutting back services across the state. Services like domestic violence centers, cancer screening services, PHEAA grants, and several education-related issues are having their funding withheld. This is unacceptable. My votes in favor of these overrides today honor the Legislature’s responsibility to provide these important entities with funding so they can continue to operate while we continue to negotiate a responsible budget.”
