“It was truly special to have these three American patriots with us as the state House approved the measure commemorating this significant historical event,” Gillen said. “We owe these three men, and every other man and woman who served during World War II, a debt of gratitude we will never be able to fully repay.”
Moore and Fleming both served in the U.S. Army and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Moore was a combat engineer and Fleming served in the infantry.
Keffer served as a boatswain’s mate in the U.S. Navy and participated in the Allied invasion at Normandy.
Gillen’s House resolution commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945. The surrender, which took place in Tokyo Bay, brought an end to World War II.
“World War II caused a tragic loss of life and its end marked a new beginning for humanity,” Gillen said. “That new beginning was made possible by people like George Moore, John Fleming and Everett Keffer, and so many others who made sacrifices so that we could enjoy the blessings of liberty and freedom.”
