Toohil Issues Statement on State Decision to Downgrade License of Luzerne County Children and Youth Office
10/6/2015
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) today said she will be seeking legislative oversight of the Luzerne County Children and Youth Agency in the wake of the state’s decision to downgrade its license. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services changed the county office to a provisional license following an investigation into the death of a child earlier this year.

Toohil issued the following statement in regard to the state’s decision.

“The fact that the Luzerne County Children and Youth Office has been downgraded to a provisional license is alarming and completely unacceptable. As a result, my colleagues and I will be exerting as much legislative oversight as possible. I plan on personally going through and scrutinizing each one of these instances; where there has been a violation, where there has been the death of a child. Each case needs to be looked at with another pair of eyes to see what the problems are and to immediately correct them. By fixing what is wrong in Luzerne County, we are going to be able to better protect these children. At any given time, there are about 400 children in the care of Luzerne County. We need to ensure they are as safe as possible and that no more tragedies occur.”
