Rigby Applauds Investment in Career and Technical Education
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Jim Rigby (R-Johnstown) says our investments in education need to match our country’s future workforce needs.
“Friday’s national employment report showed manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs in December, the final month in a year that featured otherwise solid job growth,” Rigby said. “Manufacturers are having a harder time filling positions because of a reported skills gap and we are behind in adjusting our education priorities.”
For those reasons, Rigby is endorsing the $200,000 in funding received by the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center from the Wolf administration for Phase Two of its innovative workforce teaching model, Learn Where You Will Earn.
“The program supports classroom curriculums by giving students the chance to also learn on the job,” added Rigby. “Schools need to do all they can to supply our future workers with present-day opportunities in career and technical fields of employment.”
Rigby also pointed out a renewed interest in career and technical education (CTE) in Harrisburg.
“One of the first legislative efforts I got behind in 2019, my freshman year, was the #GoodJobs4PA initiative that began with my House colleagues and I,” said Rigby. “We got the ball rolling by initiating a package of CTE legislation that will pay dividends in the future. I was proud to join the effort to provide leadership in the Legislature.”
The money will be used to maintain equipment, as well as provide financial assistance to students and recruitment efforts.
