Governor Tom Wolf delivered his annual budget address before a joint session of Pennsylvania’s House and Senate on Tuesday in Harrisburg. The Governor proposed a $32.3 billion spending plan with no new major taxes for the upcoming fiscal year. House Republicans were encouraged by the Governor’s decision to work with lawmakers to explore several cost-saving measures in order to balance the budget.

Legislation designed to combat the spread of opioid abuse was introduced on Monday in Harrisburg. House Bill 353, sponsored by Rep. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer & Butler), would require that prescriptions for opioids be transmitted electronically, ensuring that the prescription drug monitoring database is accurate and up-to-date. Nesbit said that his bill would modernize efforts to curb addiction while providing greater convenience and quicker service to patients.

In an effort to ensure more people can be helped to overcome addiction in the most cost effective manner, Rep. Gene DiGirolamo (R-Bucks) has announced a proposal to maintain and strengthen Pennsylvania’s cabinet-level Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Rep. DiGirolamo, chairman of the House Human Services Committee, spoke Tuesday at capitol press conference and said the mission of this department is too important to allow the merging of all state drug and alcohol programs into the state Department of Health, as recently proposed by the Wolf administration.
