Landmark legislation that represents a big win for Pennsylvania National Guard members and their families was signed into law Monday in Harrisburg. The new law offers a free college education for a Pennsylvania National Guard member as well as their spouse and children in exchange for a a six-year reenlistment. The benefit can be used to attend any Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education school free or for partial tuition benefits at other institutions of higher learning approved by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. Bill sponsor Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware), chairman of the House veterans Affairs and Emergency Services Committee, said it is hoped that the new education benefit program will increase enlistment retention among members of the PA National Guard.
