Smith Speaks Out on Democrats’ Refusal to Recognize Republicans on Charlie Kirk Resolution
2/10/2026
HARRISBURG – State Rep. Brian Smith (R-Jefferson/Indiana) issued this statement following the House Tourism, Recreation and Economic Development Committee meeting last week in which Republicans were not recognized to speak on House Bill 1929:

“I do not have a problem with the majority party choosing to re-refer this bill to the House State Government Committee. There are several reasons why the State Government Committee may be the more appropriate place for this piece of legislation, which would establish Charlie Kirk Day as an official state holiday on the first Monday of August each year.

“However, I have a major problem with Democrats not listing this important bill on the public agenda. Then, by not recognizing Republicans to speak on the issue, they’ve silenced the tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians that sent us to Harrisburg to be their voice.

“The sad irony of this situation is that Charlie Kirk was renowned as an advocate for free speech and civil debate, and that is exactly what Republicans were denied in our committee meeting. Legislators should have the chance to be heard on this bill and every other bill we consider. That’s what we were elected to do.”
